DSC #4, November 19, 2005

Over 30 people turned out for DCS #4 tonight. It was a celebrative night. Ian and Colleen announced they became engaged last night and we also celebrated Baird and Hilja's BD's too. Thanks Hilja for making the BeDe compatible carrot cake. It was most creative... and even more delicious!

Learning Lots of New Details About Calvin

I went out today and bought Marilynne Robinsons non fiction book: The Death Of Adam, Essays on Modern Thought, because I got my socks blown off on Sunday when I heard her speak about how progressive Calvin was and is. So I read ONE of the essays today and learned a ton. I heard a fair amount about Calvin while earning my degree in Theology. BUT, I don't recall my conservative evangelical Bible college Church History class ever teaching most of what I am reading now, such as: Calvin's broad influence on New England (and indeed the northeast US) thru the reforms in Geneva in 1528, which were brought to Holland and then thru the Dutch to the Northern US. Examples? Religion based on the political structures of the Geneva reforms like town meetings and civil elections...and hence congregational church structures....just as a start.

Well, I am sure I will be blogging more about this on my own blog http://musingsfromshute-ho.blogspot.com/
if you are inclined to want to hear more..but..I just had to make mention of it here for you Calvin fans out there.
